AGA Issues Guideline on Management of Pouchitis

Edward Barnes, MD, MPH, an IBD specialist and assistant professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, sat down with GEN’s Sarah Tilyou to discuss the American Gastroenterological Association’s first-ever guideline on pouchitis and inflammatory pouch disorders. He addressed implications for clinicians, the impetus for the guidelines, and points of debate and current gaps in research.

According to Dr. Barnes, the guidelines aim to minimize “gray areas” because many treating providers had questions about pouchitis and lacked a “sense of comfort with how they were taking care of patients in this scenario.” This new guideline is not an “end-all, be-all,” he said, but ideally will help the many clinicians with limited experience treating pouchitis devise a management approach guided by available evidence.
