About the Prizes

Each year, three individuals are chosen for recognition by the Sherman Prize Board of Directors, guided by the Sherman Prize Selection Committee — five of the nation’s preeminent IBD researchers, clinicians, scholars and healthcare providers representing diverse areas of expertise.

Sherman Prize recipients are high performers from a variety of professional disciplines who represent “Excellence in Crohn’s and Colitis” in their chosen endeavors, having dedicated their careers to the fight to overcome IBD. They approach their work with remarkable passion, going above and beyond to make exceptional pioneering contributions in the field of IBD. They meet challenges with innovative approaches that serve as a lasting inspiration to others.

The Prizes come with several important forms of recognition: A financial prize and communications that showcase the recipients’ work among colleagues and the greater IBD community.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION

National recognition is an important part of the Prize. Sharing the stories of our recipients is our way of creating a ripple effect by inspiring others, and is a very rewarding aspect of receiving a Sherman Prize according to past honorees. While the specifics of our communications initiatives may change from year to year, some examples of past activities include:

  • Live awards presentations, where recipients are recognized in front of an audience of prominent members of the IBD community.
  • Production and distribution of a video highlighting his or her extraordinary achievements.
  • Publishing recipients’ stories and biographical information on our website and our social media channels — X, LinkedIn, and Facebook.
  • Public Relations support to generate news coverage of recipients’ achievements.
