About the Prizes

Each year, three individuals are chosen for recognition by the Sherman Prize Board of Directors, guided by the Sherman Prize Selection Committee — five of the nation’s preeminent IBD researchers, clinicians, scholars and healthcare providers representing diverse areas of expertise.

These individuals have gone above and beyond to make exceptional, pioneering contributions in the field of IBD. Through their work, they inspire tomorrow’s innovators in the fight to overcome Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

The Prizes come with several important forms of recognition: A financial prize and communications that showcase the recipients’ work among their peers in the IBD community.

Sharing the stories of our recipients is an important part of the Prize. It is our way of creating a ripple effect by inspiring others and is one of the most rewarding aspects of receiving a Sherman Prize. While the specifics of our communications initiatives may change from year to year, some examples of past activities include:

  • Live awards presentations, where recipients are recognized in front of an audience of influential members of the IBD community.
  • Production and distribution of a video about his or her extraordinary achievements.
  • The recipients’ stories and biographical information posted on our website and our social media channels — Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and YouTube.
  • Public Relations support — press releases distributed by news wire, which has resulted in published news articles focused on recipients’ achievements.
